Stair Steps

To help your child's language look at where your child is at in his language development.  Try to communicate with your child slightly above his level.  This will give your child a model that is easier for him to understand and/or imitate.

Child on bottom step and adult on next step up.

- When the parent speaks with the child using single words and sounds it is easier for the child at the sound level to understand and/or imitate.

Child on second step and adult on the top step

- When the parent speaks with the child in full sentences it is more difficult for the child at the single word level to understand and/or imitate.

This doesn't mean that 100% of the time you should simplify how you talk with your child.  Choose some times during the day where you simplify your talking with your child.
