Teaching "stuck"

ACTIVITY OF THE DAY

 

Today everything will be stuck.  These activities will teach your child to say the word "stuck."  "Stuck" is a useful word that will help your child communicate that something is not happening right.  Today when your child wants a cookie or cracker pretend it is stuck in the package.  As you pretend it is stuck make a stuck sound (kind of like a straining sound) and say the word "stuck" several times.  When you go to open a door with your child nearby pretend that the door is stuck and say stuck several times along with the straining sound.   Here are some other examples of how you can model the word "stuck":

Pretend a water faucet can't turn off.

Pretend a hat is stuck on your head.

Pretend a block is stuck on the floor.

Pretend a spoon is stuck in your hand.

You get the idea.  Make lots of things be "stuck" today.  The goal is to provide as many models of the word "stuck" as possible.  Silly things can keep a child's interest such as a block being stuck on the floor.  Your child may come and help when the item is "stuck".  Let that be part of the game.  Don't make things stuck to the point of frustration.  After 2-3 models of the word stuck with your child listening then go ahead and somehow find a way to make it unstuck.

For instance if a block is stuck on the floor it may go like this

Parent:  Block stuck.  stuck.  uuuuuuuhhhhhhhh.

Child:  looks and walks over

Parent:  Stuck.  stuck.  uuuuuhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Child:  looks at block, reaches for it

Parent:  stuck.  stuck.  uuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Child: picks up block and smiles

Many children enjoy this game and will want it to be repeated over and over.
